The Person Sets the Direction: Person-Centred Practice

Course Overview

Person-centred practice means recognising each participant as an individual with their own identity, strengths, preferences, relationships, routines and goals. It requires support workers to listen carefully, provide accessible choices and adapt their approach rather than expecting the person to fit around staff routines.

This course explores how person-centred principles apply during everyday SIL support. It covers individual communication, meaningful goal-based activities, genuine choice, flexible routines, community relationships, privacy, dignity of risk and graded assistance.

Workers will learn how to support independence without taking over, balance safety with ordinary adult choice and ensure shared living continues to feel like each participant’s home.
