Safe Insulin Support and Administration

Safe Insulin Support and Administration

About this course

Course Overview

Develop the practical knowledge needed to safely support a person who uses insulin, including essential pre-administration checks, safe insulin administration, monitoring, documentation and recognising when concerns need to be escalated.

Prerequisite: Complete the Diabetes Support course before undertaking this training.

Why take this course?

Supporting someone who uses insulin involves much more than administering an injection. Support workers need to understand the checks that must happen beforehand, follow the person’s individual support and diabetes management plan, administer insulin safely within their role, and recognise when something is not right.

Building on the foundational knowledge covered in Diabetes Support, this course focuses specifically on the practical responsibilities involved in insulin support.

You’ll explore the six Rights of safe medication administration, pre-insulin checks, different types of insulin, correct storage, insulin delivery devices, injection site rotation and safe sharps handling. The course also covers what workers should do when insulin is late, missed or cannot be administered as planned.

Importantly, the course establishes clear professional boundaries. A support worker’s role is to follow the person’s prescribed plan, complete required checks, provide support within their training and competency, monitor the person, document accurately and escalate concerns when required. Decisions about prescribing insulin or changing doses remain with the person’s treating diabetes healthcare team.
