Online Safety Is Everyday Safety

About this course
Course Overview
Online safety isn’t separate from everyday safety. For children and young people, messaging friends, gaming, watching videos, learning and spending time online are simply part of life.
This course helps carers and support people feel more confident navigating that world without needing to become technology experts. It explores common risks including scams, bullying, unsafe contact and inappropriate or extreme content, while recognising that young people who have experienced trauma may face additional vulnerabilities online.
Rather than approaching the internet as something that simply needs to be restricted, the course looks at how to balance safety with the benefits of being online — including friendships, entertainment, learning and developing everyday digital skills.
You’ll also explore why curiosity and open conversations matter. Young people may understand technology better than the adults supporting them, and allowing them to share what they know can help build trust and create more natural conversations about staying safe.
